Halfling Hotpot Catapult

I've had this piece painted for a while, but its yet to see the tabletop. It was painted for use as a light war engine for God of Battles in a mercenary army.

I've got a nice little collection of halflings building up which I intend to share some of soon.












I'm a huge fan of some of the wackier creations Games Workshop put out in the past. The pump wagon previously posted is another great example.










I'm glad others seem keen on this opinion as well, I was sorely tempted to get in on The Assault Group's "chickstarter" to get some halflings on giant roosters but decided not to in the end, I'm sure I'll end up getting some when they are released.

Goblin Sharpstick Thrower

After getting a pasting at Gods of Battles at the club last Thursday I decided to order a Goblin Bolt Thrower to bolster my Orc Warlord ranks.

Its a Goblin Sharpstick thrower from Mantic Games. Its got two more crew which I haven't finished yet. I replaced the shield on the front of the machine with a Orc standard top from my bits box and added a Crooked Claw mushroom to the base.

I picked it up from eBay for £15 inc. postage, which I think is reasonable, its a really nice kit (though it took a bit of cleaning up), I'm tempted to get another - I suppose it'll come down to how well it gets on at its next outing at the club!

Sn-Ogre!?

I had a handful of ogres left over from a previous army so I thought I might stick one together as a test piece for the barbarians.
















I'm pretty pleased with how he's turned out - I'll probably end up painting another two or three so its more a game-able unit.

Goblin Archers

I picked up a bag of the old 4th edition warhammer goblins cheaply on ebay to paint up as some cannon fodder for fantasy games.

I think they've come out quite nicely for a quick job - the only thing that got any time was the skin.

More Barbarians

I've painted up a couple more figures for the barbarians.
First up is a Slaine figure from Wargames Foundry. He's a wonderful sculpt - I decided not to paint him as Slaine is depiected and went for a colour scheme to match the rest of my figures. In retrospect I should have done a headswap to depart him from 2000AD a bit more - oh well!

I'm fairly pleased with how his fur cloak has come out. Though the metallics aren't as good as the last lot. 

Next up we have the marauder champion. He was released at the same time as the marauders from the last post. He's a decent sculpt but the pose is a bit awkward (I wouldn't wanted to have had to rank him up!)

Here he is leading his merry band of plunderers and pillagers. 

More Barbarians!

Inspired by the tiger riding chap in the last post I dug out these old Chaos Marauders from Games Workshop from the lead mountain. I'd picked them up cheap from ebay last year, not sure with what in mind (probably Frostgrave). 

I've always liked Dave Andrews' sculpts (his medieval swiss that foundry make are fantastic), they aren't always the best proportioned (big hands!) but they always paint up well and are full of character

I'm on the lookout for some more of these now - or the Bearmen of Urslo from the Dogs of War range, which match up nicely. Drop me a comment below if you've got some. 

Here's a group shot of the barabarians so far. Evil Big Boris from Heresy Miniatures has photobombed the picture - he was painted a while ago and has been based up to match. 

Barbarian on Sabertooth Snow Tiger

Last week Kevin Dallimore posted up a picture of this figure he'd painted on the Steve Dean Painting forum and I knew I had to have a go at the same, so I promptly put in an order to Folorn Hope Games and with a couple of days he was primed and ready to go.

I decided to go with tiger stripes rather than leopard spots as I did a snow leopard for Frostgrave last year. I'm pleased with the result, I can't stress enough how useful having some pictures of snow tigers on my phone in front of me was while I did it.

In the end I probably rushed him a little, but I'm pleased with the result. I had a rummage in the lead mountain as well and dug out some old Chaos Marauders (the Dave Andrews sculpts) and intend to paint up a small unit of them to go with him, the makings of a Dragon Rampant or God of Battles force I think! 

Savage Orcs

My friend Tom came to visit on Thursday so instead of a trip to the lovely ELMs club we had a game in my loft. I decided I'd like to use my Orcs (or Orruks if you like) and thought it'd be a good opportunity to finish up a unit of Savage Orcs I've had half done for ages. 

Here they are:

The figures are a mixture of Shieldwolf Miniatures Orcs and some resin heads I found on ebay (maximini or kromlech, I forget which). The shieldwolf plastics are of good quality and I like the dynamism of the poses, The heads are nice but I found them a bit fiddly to paint, which sapped my enthusiasm a bit. If I decide to do a few more (I have enough for 10 more bodies) I'll try and source some Games Workshop Savage Orc heads and use those. 

As for the game itself, we went for Age of Sigmar and played a 50point game using the SCGT comp pack. We played The Cursed City battleplan from the Quest for Ghal Maraz book, which saw spirits attack larger units as casualties mounted up. I really enjoyed the mechanism and managed to squeeze a win. The savage orcs didn't do anything spectacular - I think they lack the power they had in 8th edition - I expect they need a character near them to perform to their true potential. 

Ghoul King

I picked up this chap up from Cavalier Books last week with the aim of using him in both Age of Sigmar and Frostgrave. I picked up a box of mantic ghouls at the same time that I intend to paint to match.













I've based him to match the undead knights from the last post, using a Renedra gravestone clipped down to look a bit more rustic.

Beginnings of an Undead army

Last year I picked up a few undead bits of ebay very cheaply and they've been languishing in the lead mountain for a while and I decided to pull them out and slap some paint on.

 The figures were released in the 1990s with the circle of blood campaign pack (which I have ideas about trying to play in Age of Sigmar). I really like them - this chap has a real Judge Death feel about him which I'm sure is deliberate.

I'm hoping they will see service in games of AoS as black knights well as skeleton knights in games of God of Battles.

I've still got the command group to paint and I'm scouting on eBay for the mounted wraith that got released at the same time.

Ogre Hunter

I've been steadily painting up this miniature for a month or so, which is a long time for me, just doing bits and pieces as I feel like it.

I'm really pleased with how he's turned out, particularly the warpstone, so much so I'm tempted to break out the last few ogres I have lying around from the ogre battalion I bought about 5 years ago. I still have a ninja maneater as well somewhere!

Arachnarok Spider

I got this monster as a present last Christmas (2015!) and it sat for quite a long time because I was a bit intimidated by the thought of painting in.

 I finally got around to it at the end of 2015, and I really enjoyed painting it. I tackled it in several bits: the spider, the base, the howdah and the goblins - I probably rushed the last two parts a bit but I'm happy its all finished.

Not sure when I'll get around to use him "in game" - my regular warhammer/AoS opponents have gone AWOL of late and no one down the club plays. I'm sure I'll work him into a game of God of Battles or Kings of War if I pester someone enough!

Goblin Wartower

I bought this piece from Scotia Grendel age ago and it has been languishing half painted for far too long. The ELMS club annual modeling competition was approaching so I thought I'd use that as an excuse to get it finished so I could enter it.

I'm really pleased with how its come out. I went for an oval base as it framed the figure nicely. It'll probably end up being used a Basiladon or something similar in Age of Sigmar or possibly just a chariot or pump wagon. 

I'm a big fan of the sneaky goblins under the howadah poking out with spears and bows.

(I managed to get 1st place at the club competition, which I was really chuffed with!)

Orruks

I've decided I want to paint up a small force for Age of Sigmar. I don't think all the criticism leveled at the game is at all justified and I expect mostly comes from people who rarely wargame let alone have tried the game.

Anyway, being a bit of a goblin myself I decided I'd start with some orcs, or Orruks, as they are now called. I'm a bit cautious to spend big on some of the current range as I expect it will be replaced sooner or later with something nicer so at the moment I'm going to go for some cheaper, generic options. These are from the 5th Edition starter set which I picked up from ebay for about 50p each. I have some more in various states of completion but I'm awaiting some 30mm bases to pop them on.

They were painted up relatively quickly, using a brown spray undercoat, a brown wash over the leathers, the metals were washed then given a quick drybrush, everything else just got a quick highlight. The only thing that was given any time and care was the skin (Foundry Moss triad, with a wash of Agrax Earthshade after the A layer) so they match my other orcs.

These will likely see action in Dragon Rampant when it arrives as well being called into action for of Gods and Mortals if I can find some opponents.
